CrossFit Novem’s Athlete of the Month: Amanda

Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Novem’s Athletes of the Month, Amanda!

What got you into CrossFit and how has CrossFit impacted your life??
In the spring of 2013, I had a severe concussion and was unable to work for one month and unable to work out for several months. By fall 2013, I was out of shape, depressed, and I felt sick every time I tried to exercise. Luckily, a Novem Living Social deal for boot camp found me. After 1 month of boot camp, I was able to work out again and I was signing up for On Ramp. The Novem coaches and community have had a huge impact on me and have really changed my life.

Name a fitness goal that you have.
My fitness goal is to do unassisted pull-ups in a workout. I can do one or two but I want to be able to complete an entire workout without having to use bands.

Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I have a hidden tattoo on my right upper butt cheek. (Or maybe not so hidden since my pants always fall down when I do burpees). My 8 cousins and I have the same tattoo that we got together before my cousin Frank left on his second tour of Iraq. He came home safe and we all have something to remind us how important family is.

What is your Athletic background?

I am a distance swimmer at heart. I swam competitively for 12 years and I am lucky enough to have an Endless Pool at work so I can still workout in the pool. Distance swimming has helped me a lot with CrossFit and pacing during long workouts. I am the tortoise, not the hare, when it comes to WODs and I prefer the 20 minute workouts over the 8 minute sprints.

Favorite Benchmark, wod, and lift.
My favorite benchmark workout is Nancy. I love the challenge of running and the overhead squats.
