Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Novem’s Athletes of the Month, Cassie!
What got you into CrossFit?
I had been doing a lot of group fitness classes and (boring) cardio machines a couple of years ago when I started dating this new guy who did CrossFit. After several years of convincing, he finally talked me into trying a class. I enjoyed the class way more than expected but was still pretty scared of the idea of CrossFit. After a couple more months, I became more serious about my fitness goals and hesitantly made the commitment to try CrossFit for real. I found Novem and immediately became hooked on both the fitness and the community. I wish I had gotten over my fear sooner!
Name a fitness goal that you have.
I’ve wanted to be able to do a full push-up since before I even started CrossFit. Now, I’m getting really close to reaching that goal! As a more long term goal, I’m slowly working my way through the different band scaling to be able to do a strict pull-up.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I’m a bit of a bookworm and a closet nerd.
What is your Athletic background?
I played travel volleyball year-round throughout middle and high school. In college, I stopped playing organized sports and started a years long off and on relationship with cardio machines. About two years before I started Crossfit, I expanded my gym routine to include different types of fitness classes and free-weight training.
Favorite Benchmark, wod, and lift.
Deadlifts are my jam! Now that I feel more confident with them, snatches are pretty cool too.
My favorite wods are the ones that have running/rowing in them (and any one that doesn’t include burpees or lunges).
As for benchmarks, I really liked Helen- the 400m runs and pull-ups are two things that are challenging but fun and I’ll never complain about kettlebell swings.
How has CrossFit impacted your life?
Besides the obvious fitness benefits, CrossFit at Novem has also increased my self confidence. Almost every single class I look at the board and some aspect of the workout makes me think, “There’s no way I can do that.” But then, every single class, I do! My progress is constantly surprising me and through CrossFit I’m not only setting goals that I never thought would be possible for me, but I am reaching them.
