Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Novem’s Athletes of the Month, Dan!
What got you into CrossFit?
I started a bootcamp-like program in 2007 and did that for a while, but that facility closed and I just fell back into running for my fitness. In 2012, I was looking to add strength training to my exercise routine and found a CF in Trenton close to where I was living, so that was my start. I moved back into Philly in late 2015 and soon found Novem. It’s been over 2 years at Novem now and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of friends and coaches.
Name a fitness goal that you have.
Easy…100 double-unders unbroken. Hell, I’d take 10! Even after taking a double-unders class…it’s just not in the cards. Practice, practice, practice.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
Well, some people know, but I’ve volunteered at the Philly Zoo for over 10 years now. I’ve always loved animals and to answer the eventual question that everyone has, no I don’t get to handle any animals. But Novem and the Zoo are my happy places.
What is your Athletic background?
No formal sports beyond the typical childhood stuff, but I’ve always been very active, whether running, racquetball-ing, golfing, hiking. The occasional half-marathon or fun run is about as competitive as I’ll get these days.
Favorite Benchmark, wod, and lift.
lift. I always like Fight Gone Bad, but damn if I don’t end up within +/- 5 reps of my PR every time. And any wod containing wall balls or rowing…that’s my jam. If I had to pick a lift, it would be the clean…no jerk!
How has CrossFit impacted your life?
As I got older I realized that I can’t CF every day like I did when I started. It just kills my knees when mixed in with running. But it’s something that I want to be able to do for as long as I can, and I’ve noticed significant changes over the last 5 years. I’ve finally found a balance of CF and running that works for me and I couldn’t be happier with the results. And of course the people!
