Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Novem’s Athletes of the Month, Geoff!
What got you into CrossFit?
At the time I got interested in CrossFit I was training for my first marathon. The endless slow miles added to a grinding feeling of decline that was setting as a result of being a lifetime runner in his early 30’s. Those long slow miles alternating with nights of soccer on turf and hardwood gym surfaces was
leaving me feeling like hot garbage. I couldn’t bend over and tie my shoes or get down stairs without leaning on a rail. I had the mobility of someone double my age who worked on the docks his whole life. I needed to actually try and achieve some balance in my training if I wanted to continue being active deep into my 30’s and beyond. So one night while I was running past the gym, I stopped in and talked to Lesha. I think she thought I was a hobo looking for a bathroom. She wasn’t entirely wrong, but I did come back for On Ramp. The rest was history.
Name a fitness goal that you have.
I would like to do what I have called a Trifecta of Suck – Road Marathon, Spartan Beast, and Rx Murph – in a six month period. Basically find a new level of suffering and mediocrity via multiple recreational activities and disciplines simultaneously.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I get stopped by hockey fans because I look like Ottawa Senators legend Daniel Alfredsson, especially with my long hair.
What is your Athletic background?
Middling D3 College Cross Country and Track Athlete. Post Collegiate Beer League soccer All Star (in my own mind).
Favorite Benchmark, wod, and lift.
Helen for Benchmark. WOD Type – long and terrible with a dash of running. Lift – Back Squat – limited technique required, lots of opportunity for grunting and making a scene.
How has CrossFit impacted your life?
I can tie my shoes now! It’s really cool to be able to perform basic daily tasks of living. All kidding aside, CrossFit – but especially Novem – has put forth a constructive program for me to follow. I have learned a ton about a better, more balanced approach to fitness. I think this the Novem community is a special place that brings together a lot of very different people to improve themselves in a fun positive environment. I work in a high stress, long hour business and I really look at the time in the gym as an escape from that world. Novem puts me in a better place mentally and physically.
