Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Novem’s Athletes of the Month, James!
What got you into CrossFit?
I played hockey in Maryland with a few guys that were into CrossFit. They convinced me to try an intro class and I was quickly hooked.
Name a fitness goal that you have.
I struggle with longer workouts so I’m trying to improve my endurance. I have a rower at home so I’m working on interval/long distance rows. The goal right now is to just get on the rower 3-5 times / week. I’ll find a baseline for the longer rows and then work on improving that time.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I sang in choir for a few years…
What is your Athletic background?
I’ve been playing hockey since I was 4 years old. I’m only subbing on rec teams right now. I try to play racquetball when I can and then I always golf in the spring/summer and snowboard in the winter. I was into a lot growing up – baseball, soccer, tennis, skateboarding, and BMX.
Favorite Benchmark, wod, and lift.
Isabel (30 power snatches FT) and Grace (30 C&J FT) are two of my favorite benchmarks. I usually like WODs where you don’t hold anything back and the workout has some squats and rowing involved. Favorite lifts are snatches or front/back squats.
How has CrossFit impacted your life?
After two years of CrossFit, I am definitely a stronger and faster athlete now at age 30 than when I was playing hockey 6-7 times a week and weight training 4-5 times a week. CrossFit has also introduced me to things to focus on outside of direct training that have significant impacts on performance – specifically – sleep quality, nutrition, and mobility.
