Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Novem’s Athletes of the Month, Jose!
What got you into CrossFit?
Right before my 28th birthday last year, I began getting bored of my gym routine. For two years, I changed gyms several times. I even hired personal trainer but it wasn’t challenging enough. I wanted to try something more exciting so that I wouldn’t grow bored easily. In September 2017, I joined CrossFit and I believe it was the best decision of my life. Every day, I feel like I am reaching new limits, thanks to the coaches and other CrossFit members.
Name a fitness goal that you have.
My goal is to get better at thrusters and stop doing straight pull-ups all the time. But most importantly, my overall goal is to be the next Tony! So watch out Tony.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I came to the United States on the day of my 12th birthday on November 4th, 2001. It was a great birthday present but a sad day because I was leaving my sister in Ecuador that raised me since I was 2 years old.
What is your Athletic background?
I used to play soccer when I was kid back in Ecuador. I was never a huge athlete but I was always swimming and running around. I believe that soccer plays a major role now when it comes to front and back squats because I think playing helped me build strong legs.

How has CrossFit impacted your life?
CrossFit impacted my life in different ways. It made me realize that waking up at 5am is not that bad after all. If I can do that, I can do anything. CrossFit makes me feel more confident about my fitness and has showed me that I can always do better. I feel healthier and now I am able to run more than before.
When I joined crossfit, everyone made me feel welcome and now I feel like part like part the family. Especially when Laura B. keeps encouraging me to do more weights and not to be afraid to try new things.
