Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Novem’s Athletes of the Month, Matt!
What got you into CrossFit?
When I got out of high school I did a lot of partying. With no gym routine I packed on some serious pounds. A friend of mine kept beating my ear off about trying CrossFit, and a kid I knew from school had opened his own affiliate so I went and gave it a shot. Had a serious love/hate relationship with it and I’ve been doing it ever since.
Name a fitness goal that you have.
My fitness goals have changed a lot over the years. When I first started CrossFit making regionals was something I wanted. Now I’m just trying to stay healthy and fit enough to survive as a 33 year old apprentice and live happily ever after with my wife and the Bishop.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
This is a tough question, but honestly if there is something you don’t know about me there is probably a reason why I have never told you.
What is your Athletic background?
I played every Rec Department sport there was when I was growing up; baseball, basketball, soccer and so on. I ended up playing football in high school and some soccer later on in life. I was never really that good at anything but I was always ok at everything (never the last one picked)
Favorite Benchmark, wod, and lift.
My favorite benchmark workout is most likely Helen. As far as everyday workouts go, I like a descending ladder. Always helps me mentally when there is light at the end of the tunnel. Favorite lift would have to be anything from the hang. I have a terrible first pull so the hang is where I’m most comfortable.
How has CrossFit impacted your life?
I met my beautiful wife while doing CrossFit, I met some of my best friends while doing CrossFit, and I could really go on and on about all the things it’s helped me achieve. But for me it’s all about the feeling of accomplishment when you get out of the gym – whether I trashed the workout or had my elbows on my knees for minutes at a time crouched over gasping for air. If you’re considering it, stop wasting time and take control of your life. Hard work pays off.
