CrossFit Novem’s Athlete of the Year: Chris Guido

Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Athlete of the Year, Chris Guido.

Outside of Cross Fit, what do you do with yourself?
I have a family with two relatively new additions that I love spending time with. I have a pretty high demand job so that keeps me busy. And I try to give back to my community as much as I can. I love music so always trying to get to shows asfrequently as I can. And oh yeah, gaming.

What was your first introduction into CrossFit ?
A girl I had just met through online dating (Abby) convinced me to join a sadistic workout regimen after 16 years of smoking and abusing my body throughout my 20’s. Eventually I would marry Abby. CrossFit, but in particular, Novem would be a huge part all throughout.

When did you start participating at Novem?
I started 6.5 years ago

When is your anniversary?
My anniversary is…. January 2nd , 2012

When did you decide Cross Fit was the right choice for you and your fitness?
I think it was just with how quickly I clicked with the community. The early stages of Novem everyone knew everyone and we all went out together. It was small back then, but it made it so much easier grinding out workouts with people you were out with the night before. I still try to make a point to meet every unfamiliar face at the gym. I think it’s important because I know walking in there at first can sometimes be intimidating.

How frequently do you train?
In my prime, I was going 5-6 times a week. After having 2 kids, it’s cut back a little bit, but try to get there 3-4 times a week. I’ve also started sprinkling in some yoga for core strength and stress relief.

What was the hardest part of getting started with CrossFit?
Quitting smoking. At that point in my life I would get winded running half a block.

What is the best part that gets you to the gym? Or what do you look forward to?
A countless number of things. Stress relief after a tough day at work. Seeing friends (there’s no crew like the 7:30 crew). Finishing a brutal workout. But really Novem is just a special place. Definitely a home away from home. Crossfit is cool and all, but there’s not many gyms like Novem.

What has been your happiest moment or greatest self accomplishment at Novem?
Finishing 2 nd at my first competition was a pretty proud moment. Double unders. Muscle ups. Walking on my hands?!? So I don’t think there is a single moment. I think it is just the culmination of a lot of things happening that, in the beginning, I would think there is no way I’ll ever do that. Lots of patience, practice and good form. I’ve always been a believer that if you put in the work you can accomplish anything. Some things come harder to others and some things easier, so it’s a matter of how much you’re willing to put in to it.

What advice would you give to someone new starting out?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help, especially around lifts. In my opinion, it takes at least a year to become simply just proficient at them. Have an experienced lifter look at your form. The smallest of tips will lend to huge improvements. And go full range of motion on EVERY movement you do (I’m looking at you pushups; thighs, chest and chin touch the ground), unless injury is keeping you from doing so. It will make everything else you do easier.

Do you have any expectations for this year in terms of your fitness?
After doing this for 6+ years it really comes down to maintaining and staying injury free for me. I can jump up and down on the ground with my kids, bound up the steps and squat with multiple grocery keys to pick up my keys.

Favorite Movement or Lift:
Deadlift. For whatever reason I can move an abnormally large amount of weight for
this. But the Snatch is the most fun form a technical perspective, no question.

Favorite Bench Mark Wod or Style of WOD (AMRAP, Hero, Girl, Chipper, etc .)
I’ve been traumatized by every single one at this point. 12 days of Christmas is
always really fun to me though.
