Behind the scenes with our Barbell Athlete of the Month, Cristin!
How or when did your focus shift to concentrating on Novem’s Barbell Club programming?
Once I started crossfit, I became interested in the Olympic lifts. I decided to start taking barbell classes so I could improve. And before I knew it I was taking more barbell classes than crossfit. However, I still crossfit or bootcamp from time to time. I haven’t forgotten my Novem roots!
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I have an art background, I was a printmaking major in college and went on to get my Master of Art in Teaching. Currently I collaborate with my best friend Lauren on various style and design projects. I’m also a bit of a color theory nerd, I love helping people pick out paint colors!
What is your Athletic background?
I studied dance and I swam.
What is your favorite of the two competition lifts and why?
This is a tough one because I’ve grown to appreciate them both. When either lift comes together perfectly, it’s like poetry. It’s beautiful! The snatch has always been the most difficult for me which only makes me want to improve. And I’ve been working on my clean a lot lately. So I guess my favorite lift is the one that’s giving me the most trouble at the time. What that says about me is an entirely different survey.
What do you find most rewarding with the competition style of lifting?
When you hit your positions just right, the bar becomes weightless and you feel like you’re cheating gravity. It’s such a rewarding and albeit rare moment. But holy smokes is it cool! I also like that there is always something to work towards or improve upon. That’s what keeps me interested. I enjoy the process.
Do you have any goals or aspirations to compete?
At the moment, no.
How has Novem Barbell Club impacted your training and your life?
It’s so exciting to be in an environment where your peers encourage and challenge you at the same time.
