Behind the scenes with our Barbell Athlete of the Month, Jamie.
How or when did your focus shift to concentrating on Novem’s Barbell Club programming?
After years of CrossFit I wasn’t improving my Olympic lifts and realized I needed to focus on my technique outside of a fast workout setting. Also Lesha kept joking she wanted another little person to compete so I decided to give it a try.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I’ve bungee jumped off the Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa, the highest bridge bungee jump in the world.
What is your Athletic background?
Gymnastics, field hockey, lacrosse, and ice hockey.
What is your favorite of the two competition lifts and why?
Clean and jerk, because I am horrible at snatching, lol
What do you find most rewarding with the competition style of lifting?
Achieving ever increasing PRs is the most rewarding feeling in lifting. I am constantly competing against myself to get stronger and stronger. Every time I test a new PR, it goes to show me I’m doing something right.
Do you have any goals or aspirations to compete?
One day if I can ever snatch with the real kilo weights on the bar.
How has Novem Barbell Club impacted your training and your life?
Barbell has helped me improve my Olympic lifts and has made me so much stronger. It has made me so much more confident moving heavy weight. In life, barbell is my weekly dose of therapy. There’s something extremely therapeutic about throwing weights around.
