Behind the scenes with our Barbell Athlete of the Month, Lydia.
How or when did your focus shift to concentrating on Novem’s Barbell Club programming?
I’ve always enjoyed the weightlifting aspect of CrossFit more than anything else, so I recently decided to join to help me focus on and refine my Olympic lifts.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I have an obsession with Chick-Fil- A. If I could eat it multiple times a day every day without damaging my health or bank account, I would.
What is your Athletic background?
Sports have always been important to me. I’ve played soccer for as long as I can remember. I was the goalkeeper for my high school soccer team, and I played field hockey too. I first picked up weightlifting/CrossFit in my junior year during the off season of varsity sports.
What is your favorite of the two competition lifts and why?
The Snatch. I just think it’s a beautifully smooth lift. It looks powerful, and executing it correctly feels powerful.
What do you find most rewarding with the competition style of lifting?
PRs are fun, but I think all the stuff leading up to them is more rewarding. Finding and fixing weaknesses and becoming consistent so that I can come in and make percentages feel easy that I was struggling with the day or the week before is really nice.
Do you have any goals or aspirations to compete?
Right now I’m trying to add at least 10 kg to my totals to meet qualifying totals for the American Open Series.
How has Novem Barbell Club impacted your training and your life?
Barbell Club gives me an hour and a half to put everything to the side and just lift which is crucial for my physical and mental health. In just the past few weeks, Johnny and Lesha have helped me improve my form, so that I can get comfortable in the right positions. Since I can get stuck in my ways, taking a step back to fix the details has been really important.
