Behind the scenes with our Novem Barbell Club’s Athlete of the Year, Cristin Maiolino.
How or when did your focus shift to concentrating on Novem’s Barbell Club programming?
After going from BootCamp to CrossFit I really wanted to get better at the Olympic lifts, especially the snatch. I think it was sometime in 2014.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I’ve always been good at doing accents and impersonations. One of my coworkers and I will have full work related conversations in our best Marisa Tomei voices. Now I probably complete the rest of this survey in my Marisa Tomei voice in my head.
What is your Athletic background?
I did dance growing up. We had a pool growing up, so I tried competitive swimming but it didn’t last long. I loved swim practice but had little interest in the meets.
What is your favorite of the two competition lifts and why?
Probably the snatch because it gives me the most grief but when it comes together it’s beautiful. It’s like cheating gravity and I think that feeling is pretty damn cool.
What do you find most rewarding with the competition style of lifting?
Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment, but I really enjoy that there is always something to improve upon.
Do you have any goals or aspirations to compete?
Not currently, but who knows!
How has Novem Barbell Club impacted your training and your life?
It’s definitely been a great stress relief. I really enjoy how it stimulates me mentally as well as physically. I’ve gotten to meet lots of wonderful people too!
