Behind the scenes with our BootCamp Athlete of the Month, Mindy.
What made you decide to join our Novem BootCamp?
When I moved to Philly I stopped exercising and lived on hoagies. It wasn’t pretty. I decided I needed to get back into shape but I get bored easily with most traditional gyms.
Name a fitness goal that you have.
I have a lot. I try to set little goals for myself all the time. Right now I want to eliminate the weird bunny hop I have to do before box jumps. Is it mental? Does it actually make me jump higher? I have no idea.
Tell us one thing about yourself that no one in the gym knows about you.
I sing little jingles to narrate my day. They are often off key and rarely rhyme. I probably sing-talk to my husband songs about squats at least once a week.
What is your Athletic background?
When I hit my (angry) teenage years I stopped any and all physical activity. It took me a long time to realize that exercise and being healthy makes a huge difference in my mood and how I feel on a day-to- day basis. Now as an adult I try to hike as often as I can and I commute by bike when the weather permits.
What is your Favorite and Least Favorite Movement? Why?
Favorite movement is probably ball slams. I get my aggression out. Least favorite is lunges. I feel like it’s a simple movement but there I am almost falling over and having to make swimmy arms to get back up. Watching the coaches demonstrate jumping lunges feels like watching some sort of sorcery. How do they not die??
How has BootCamp changed your outlook on everyday life?
I think it helps me to workout before going to work. I work in a laboratory and a lot of things are very time sensitive and have to be completed by the time I leave. Many times I write everything down on a big piece of white paper. It’s really similar to what I do when I get to the gym: I stare at the whiteboard and think “that’s a lot, but I’ll get through it.” At work I look at my white paper and think “at least there are no jumping lunges.”
