Behind the scenes with our CrossFit Novem’s Athletes of the Month, Ashleen!
What got you into CrossFit? I was first introduced to crossfit at a center city gym. It wasn’t a “crossfit” gym but most of the instructors had crossfit backgrounds and the workouts were styled after crossfit workouts. I was drawn to the community aspect and love the balance of functional movement, strength and conditioning. So while I was on maternity leave, and no longer able to go to the gym near my office, I signed up for On Ramp at Novem and am so happy I did. I was intimidated at first. There are some strong, very in-shape, people at our gym! But everyone was friendly and I got over that pretty quick. I started to see a real change in my body after adding strength training to my workout routine. What is your immediate fitness goal? Right now my immediate fitness goal is staying in shape throughout my 4th pregnancy. I truly believe crossfit/exercise/eating healthy is what has allowed me to have a healthy pregnancy over 40. Advanced maternal age at its best! I am amazed at what our bodies can do.
Name a long term fitness goal that you have. Long term, my goal is to stay in shape so I can do the things I enjoy with the people I enjoy being with (and getting my abs by this summer would be an added bonus!). I love skiing and surfing and want to be able to do both for a long time to come.
Favorite Benchmark, wod, and lift. My favorite workout is the filthy fifty. I might hate it while I’m doing it but I love it when it’s done.
How has CrossFit impacted your life? Crossfit hasn’t only benefited my physical health but also my mental health. Being able to workout on a regular basis keeps me sane. It’s a great de-stressor. Even when I don’t feel like going I’m always glad I did afterwards.
